[C38] Hot water heater

Patrick,

I just did this task in July. Keep in mind this is a very difficult access! That said, you want all fittings on the front side of the water heater- facing fwd. An obstetrical we had to over come was the previous owner installed a small floor in the bottom of the sail locker, port aft locker. blocking the lower access cutout that is needed to remove the water heater. He did this to install an additional set of house batteries, which I immediately removed, because you don't want another 200 plus lbs of weight this far aft. After listening to the mechanic cussing out the Catalina designers, I told him "Hey, Catalina didn't put that floor in- cut it out", then the heater easily came out. Once the heater is out, rudder and steering cables are accessible. Make any maintenance to these items now, such as replacing the rudder stuffing packing. For a future problem of a plugged water heater, between the engine coolant in to the heater and the return line install a bypass plug valve, which would of allowed you to quickly bypass your water heater.

Have fun, Steve O (Santa Susanna, 304)

Our engine was overheating discovered it was plugged hot water tank heat exchanger, that was about 8 years old. OK to buy new hot water tank just be sure you can by-pass unit if needed.

We take showers in regular water, have microwave for hot water and sun shower. Sure you want hot water from tap?
Best investment for me are stern rail perch seats.
I drive sitting

I'm about to enter the land of luxury and replace the hot water heater. Not sure whether to order one with a front or rear heat exchanger. Any suggestions by you veteran Cat owners would be very much appreciated.

Thanks very much.
