[C38] Rudderpost replacement

They bent the schedule 80 stainless pipe ( which they machined on a lathe for the right diameter) and welded the new straps according to Catalina newer designs.  Then I epoxied the new rudderstock to the blade, filled with urethane foam and started fiberglassing with polyester resin.   Once seal up, the faring begun with west system epoxy mix, and three layers of West system with barrier coat additive. To play it safe, have it three layers of epoxy primer and then the final coats of anti fouling paint. Installed it the next morning, assembled everything during the day and went off for a 300 mile trip on the next day. Everything worked perfectly.  One more job to the list✔️When I removed it it was easy, because it barely floated. After removing the rock hard stuff inside it and replacing it with foam, it floated a lot and had to tie a bucket full of anchor chain in order to get it deep enough to install it. Every hole was seal with foam to avoid water coming into the post.  Since the stuff inside was that hard, The external fiberglass skin  was too thin, so I reinforced it with three layers of 1708 biaxial cloth. It was something different. Really heavy and hard mixed with some fiberglass fibers. Really weird.  Took one full  day to get rid of that in order remove the rudderstock.  Will replace with foam like any other contemporary rudder. I’m removing the old one from the blade and noticed a design that I thought was void around 1980. I thought I had a straight post with stainless straps instead of a couple big plates. Has someone opened their rudder and found a different rudderstock design? BTW, it was really scary removing the rudder with the boat in the water and noticing water level is just 1.5” from the packing gland.  Too bad Catalina didn’t cut the tube a couple of inches higher, so the constant leaking could be avoided.  Second pic is the packing gland without the rudder.
