Sorry Phil,
I don’t see an attached video.

I helped a friend haul his Catalina 320 and saw something I never expected...a broken prop strut.

Hi All
I just got back having my boat towed (The Boatyard at the Grand Marina in Alameda CA ).
I was present when the boat was hauled so I was able to "shake" the prop shaft so it seems it was the bearing. I'm including a movie clip which shows the sound the bearing made when I turned the prop by hand. Since I don't know what the appropriate sound is (if any) I'm not sure it's relevant. The boat's bottom is getting painted since it's already on the hard and then after the bearing is replaced we'll see if that was the issue.
Now to gather some money....

Actually, both Max and Kerry can be right here! Our cutlass bearing is usually pressed in, but others can be secured with set screws that thread through the bracket. Given the age of our boats, I am pretty certain we all have had at least one cutlass bearing replacement and perhaps even a bracket repair. Pressing the bearing and using set screws is kind of a "belt and suspenders" solution, but I have seen this before.
Do have the yard look closely at your bracket as my best guess is your cutlass bearing has failed and perhaps has slid out of the bracket, which would give your the rumble/rattle in forward as the prop shaft was bouncing around in the bracket. Sometimes, the bracket itself is out of round and requires a reaming and oversize cutlass bearing. Don't try to just get by on this one!
One change I just made on my boat is the addition of a 1 micron water filter fitted to the washdown pump I have rigged forward under the vee birth. We sail in fresh water often well off the beaten path in Lake Superior and given the Giardia in the water we can no longer just drink from the lake.... The one micron filter is Giardia rated and lets us use as much fresh water as we want as I simply turn on the washdown pump and fill our water tank whenever we need to. The Admiral is quite pleased this this addition!
Sorry for the delayed response, but sailing where the water gets hard in the winter means we take as many opportunities to sail in the summer as we can!

My cutlass drifted out of it holder and was loose on the shaft while we were in Morrow Bay. The diver was able to slip it back on an tighten it in its proper place. I made a similar noise in forward but not reverse. Good luck.

Well after not having trouble since last year, the noise has returned.
We removed the old transmission fluid and put in fresh fluid. We tested the cable's throw and we could see the shaft turning in both directions. However, there's a loud groaning sound when in forward. The sound is not present in reverse. I'm enclosing a sound clip we've recorded. Could it be the cutlass bearing? Any suggestions on how to continue troubleshooting?
Thanks for your support and regards

Hi Pierre, and yes.. is normal that the lever hits the pedestal guard, but if I were you, I go below, disconnect the cable from the transmission lever and engage it manually and make sure there it engages ok… if so, remove the binnacle in order to reach the cable assembly….
On the other side, if the problem persist when engaging directly at the transmission, you have bigger problems..

It seems to me that the lever does not have enough travel in the forward direction thus the cable which eventually selects the gear may not pull far enough. The binnacle's tubing is in the way of the forward/reverse lever so I think I may need to adjust the cable below.
