[C38] Interior wood

Hi, Everyone,
Nancy and I have been setting up to use JACE more this year (I have been going to school and working, so JACE has been "resting" for a while). In that process, Nancy began working on the interior. She used fine bronze wool and lemon oil to both clean and restore the interior finish. The lemon also helps with the musty smell and removes the mildew that builds up in crevices and corners. We use diluted vinegar or diluted bleach (depending on color and material) to remove the mildew and musty smells from lockers and closed spaces.

For the wood, Nancy takes a ball of bronze wool about 2" in diameter, puts a bit of lemon oil (not saturated, just damp) and then scrubs the area to be restored. The color returns, and the soft lemon smell is pleasant. Be careful to go with the grain on the wood.

We purchased a nylon net back of door shoe holder at The Container Store, folded the last pocket row over and stitched it up then attached it to the inside of the head door. The pockets breathe and we store extra gloves, extra hats, shower shoes, and all the other miscellaneous bits of "necessary" boat flotsam in them. The contents are visible and easily accessible, yet hidden from view when the door is closed. It doesn't affect the use of the head at all. We used #10 wood screws in the frame of the door at the top corners, and at the bottom corners to keep it captive to the door. Don't leave the bottom loose or you will be flogged at sea.

I will be at the boat this afternoon or tomorrow morning and will take some photos. We had the cushions redone in a soft velvety tan material that looks nice, and had all new cushions made at the same time (3" for the backs and 4" for the seats. I think it is 18-24 pound foam. It makes the boat a lot more comfortable.

We like the milder look to the cushions, but I have to confess that the burgundy that was in the boat looked richer and accented the reddish hint of the interior wood.

If you are in Southern California, you might want to look at "Foam 'n' Fabrics" in San Clemente. They did a good job on our cushions. They also have a very wide variety of foams, materials and will work with you to achieve satisfaction. I cannot recommend them highly enough. They also do RV's and home items as well.

Regards,

What a timely question? Linda and I are refinishing the interior wood on Que Linda at this very moment.

The interior wood is teak. The bulkheads and large panels are a teak faced plywood. They had an oil finish from the factory and most of them still do.

Our boat, an '80 model, had so much oil and grime built up over the years that finding a removal technique was a challenge. We have found that sudsy ammonia and a scotchbright pad work really well at removing the oil. An alternative that we have been using is a small steamer, but it is pretty slow. It is good to use in the overhead areas. We have started with the companionway/galley area along with the head, which were badly water stained. Another thing that we have done to brighten the surface is to use a 2 stage phosphoric acid product called Te-ka. It along with sandpaper has done a pretty good job of getting rid of the grey.

What am I finishing it with? We are varnishing it with a polyurethane varnish. I am applying 4 coats with a light sand between coats. The satin finish looks really good right now, I hope holds up.

I would be interested in what others have done also.

Can anyone tell me what interior wood and finishes were used in the earlier (hull #69) Cat 38?

    Thanks
