Keith,

I think you answered my question why there is bolt that appears to connect the lower bracket to the chainplate that appears above deck. I gather that the chainplate is really one weldment. I am still curious about why they used a bolt to hold the parts together before welding. The other 3 lower shroud chainplates have a slightly different configuration and I gather that they require removing the cabinet face to remove the chainplates. Doing this triples the effort of inspecting the chainplates. Everything I have ever read about boat maintenance says to periodically remove the chainplates, inspect for corrosion, and rebed. I was hoping that bolt would make things easier.

Thanks for the benefit of your experience. If you could elaborate on your procedures when you rebed your forward starboard lower, it would help.

Phil

Hi Phil
I replaced the forward chainplate on the starboard side so this may not apply.
The chainplate on the starboard side (accessed through the hanging locker) is attached to the shroud above the deck and a stainless steel wire and turnbuckle below the deck attached to a fitting imbedded in the fiberglass hull. The chainplate is comprised of two pieces welded into a one piece fitting with a bolt threaded from the under side to add strength to the weld. Undoing the bolt did not affect the removal of this chainplate.
Please let me know if this helps as I will have to look at the port side at some time. I found on the starboard side that the through deck fittings were in serious need of new marine sealant.

I posed a chainplate question not too long ago and received one helpful tip. I am going to try again anyway. I have some leaking around my port aft lower shroud chainplate and started looking at the backup plate/bracket below the deck. It looked like there was a bolt screwed up from below the deck through the backing bracket into the chainplate itself. I removed the bolt but the chainplate doesn't seem to budge. I am going to question Catalina Yachts about this, but does anyone on the list have an experience removing the shroud chainplates?
