Hi, Everyone,

    I recently needed some keel work and the rudder repacked.  I solicited quotes from two shipyards, and got about the same scope of work from each.  I chose Driscoll in Mission Bay (near San Diego).  They gave me the lower estimate, and could do the work that same weekend (as could the other yard, but bucks is bucks..) They hauled JACE out, and let us stay aboard with power while the work was progressing.  Their employees were friendly helpful, courteous and provided a great job.  Did I mention we got to stay aboard?...  

    The work was first class, and because I expressed some worry about the leaks, they let me stay at their repair dock for the weekend following the launch so I could be assured everything was fixed.  

    One of the men compounded, waxed and polished JACE from stem to stern and cabin top to water line for a reasonable sum, and she looks great.  

    JACE is back at home in Dana Point, and we are as proud as ever.  Best of all they came in under their quote, even with adding on two small jobs.

  I am forwarding an email thread between myself and Catalina Yachts concerning chain plate removal.  It appears that the chainplates were not designed to be removed for inspection.

    I spoke to Gerry and showed him the photos.  The way to rebed the chain plates is from the outside.  The cover around the base on the deck can be removed.  At that point you can rebed them.

      Attached is a photo of the starboard aft lower chainplate viewed from above deck.  The chainplate on the port side is identical only opposite.  Note that 2 of the bolts shown in the photo go through the deck and connect to the chainplate bracket below the deck.

        That chain plate looks as if it has been replaced at least once.  Something looks different about it.
