I just got new sails (rolly tasker) for fly bye this year and have been
racing with them and am very stisfied with them. The dealer did live in
portland oregon (island planet sails) but now lives in the bay area. Give me
a call and I can send you his contact info and some pictures if you wish. His
pricing is usally better than the other rolly tasker lofts.

Dear Group.
Karin and I blew out our 15 year old 110% North headsail yesterday. It
gave us 5 good years of sailing and previous owners in the aggregate
similarly fine service, I'm sure. We were doing 8.5 knots passing
Alcatraz on a close reach in 24 knots of wind (the rail was no more than
2 inches above the bow wave!) when the dramatic moment occurred; boom
and a cloud of thread!
Suggestions of sailmakers for replacements appreciated. I see that the
catalina yachts website offers a 110% with #6 luff tape for our Harken
furler at a cost of about $2400 + tax. This seems to be about as low as
I can find on line.
thanx, don

I got a great set of saisl from Nationl sails. Tri
radials Main and jib for the same price as a 130 jib
from other makers. They are very high quality sails.
See there ad in mainsheet or any sail mag. The sails
are made in Roly tasker loft in Thialand. You can
check it out on the web. Also national has a sight,
just google it. Hope this helps.

Sinbad sails did our last main. Ulman did the recut on our jib
(purchased at Minney's) and cover. North provided us with a used sail
for our 22, as did Minney's. I can only say that each and every one of
them did what I needed at a fair price. The racers here in Southern CA
appear to love either North or Ulman, and it seems that which ever they
bought their last sail from is the current best.

My main is pretty much a custom job, two reef points, no logo, and flat
cut like a dinghy sail at the foot. A very powerful sail here in
Southern Ca, and with fewer strings too. Sinbad even put in a downhaul
that we don't use (I think he was disappointed).

I would say tell the sailmaker you choose your preferred winds, your
rigging setup, how much heel you can tolerate (our boats need about 17
degrees to get to full waterline benefit) and ask if they have Catalina
38 experience. The more experience your sailmaker has with the class,
the better he understands what works. If on the east coast see if the
sailmaker has one tonner experience. They are closely related to our
boats in performance I think (someone will correct me, I'm sure). The
Jib cut differs if you use the roller furler, and there are technologies
(foam luff's and cut modifications) that can give better reefed
performance.

The racers can advise on cut and penalties vs gains of which I have no
idea.

Don: I would agree with Bill Knowles. National Sail Supply in Ft Meyers
should be checked out, Tasker sails are of high quality and well finished
and are generally a bargin. They probably don't stact up against North for
racing, but should be checked on for the above reasons. The man who runs the
place is Dirk Sharland. Good luck.
