Hi Pat;
If you have cable to rope halyard you probably have a dual sheeve. To check, just run the rope up far enough so it comes out the masthead. When it does, just run it back & forth. If it does so smoothly, then you are all right.

Before you make the trip to the top, find out what sheeve you have. Most wire sheeves have a central groove for the wire and will accomodate rope, just as well. Mine were of that type.

any tips on changing from former cable to rope halyard to plain rope/line?
I know I'll have to replace the pulley at the top of the mast because the line is wider than the cable but it would cool to only have to go there once.
