Hi Joe
I have already printed out the assosiation form and will be sending in our information shortly.
Your account of the race was great. To finish 2 minutes behind a 52 ft boat is quite incredible. We experienced and interesting situation while sailing in SFO Bay a couple of weeks back - the wind was blowing about 12 -15 knots and we were sailing with a 110 jib and full main. We had just tacked a few feet infront of a 42 racing Beneteau with full kevlar sails and took off on a beat toward the Golden Gate Bridge with the 42 footer in hot pursuit. It is great to see that although we were carrying less sail, the Beneteau was not able to gain any ground on us at all. Our crew - my busband and I and our kids 10 and 13yrs old.

As first time boat owners who grew up wind surfing in South Africa, we researched the boat market for long time before we settled on the Catalina 38. Our criteria - a fast boat that could handle the San Francisco breeze that frequently reaches 25 knots during the summer, as well as one that would provide comfy accommodation for a family of four. As I said before we could not have made a better choice.

Note: it is great to hear stories about races and trips that the other Catalina 38's have taken part in. Please keep them coming.

  Regards, Eldore'

Welcome to both of you new Catalina 38 owners. We hope you will join the Catalina 38 International Association if you have not already done so. This helps keep all our communications afloat. Those of you in colder locations might be interested to hear of our race Sunday in Macavity around an oil Platform 6 miles offshore. We had a spinnaker reach to the Platform in 15 knots of breeze with a smooth sea and a close reach, almost beat, back to the turning mark, a large bell buoy and a beat to the finish. In a diverse 21 boat fleet we corrected to second. The first place boat was a Hinkley 52 who flew a chute for the first time in this race and beat us boat for boat by 2 minutes. We averaged over 5 1/2 knots for the race and hit sevens close reaching under number one genoa in 16 knots approaching the bell buoy.It was overcast and a little chilly - air temperature was about 68. We had a crew of 5 including 2 couples and the old man driving. We flew our asymmetric chute. The
Catalina 38 can really move. Joe Launie C-38 Commodore, Santa Barbara, California

                   - as new owners of a beautiful Catalina 38 ft ourselves, soon to be re-named Shya Amanzi (Zulu for hit the water) and sailing out of Alameda, we could not be happier with our boat. Although we have only had her for a 2 months we are thrilled with her sailing perfomance and grace. Enjoy and keep us posted onyour trip!

My 38 is a shoal draft model and I keep it in Florida where the water is
"thin" but I've also sailed much of the Bahamas in a boat with over 6' of
draft and only rarely did we hit bottom. There is a lot of thin water in
the Bahamas but most places are easily reached with some prudence.
