[C38] Cubic feet of air space

Ken,
Phil Gay mentioned ventilation as being important in keeping a dry
boat. In Santa Barbara we share a double slip with another boat with no
walkway between. My slip partner is an old model Catalina 36. They have
two Dorade vents forward of their dodger. I measured our boat and found
there was space. I think they really look sharp. The Dorade vent comes
with its own cowl ventilator which is removable. We take ours off when
racing to keep the crew from knocking them overboard. I had
commissioned Macavity myself and so had purchased a Milwaukee hole saw
set. The ventilators are rated at 3 inch but I believe they require a 3
1/2 inch hole thru the deck. Cutting those holes with a powerful half
inch drill and the Milwaukee hole saw went smoothly but it was scary. I
discovered our deck was 1/2 inch glass, 3/4 inch plywood and another 1/2
inch glass in a solid sandwich. That is right - 1 3/4 inches of solid
deck. That is why it does not bounce up and down when you walk on it.
(and why we are slower than the J boats in light air).
Anyway, the Dorade vents let in air and keep out water. Our boat
smelled much better after this installation. I am going to the boat
tomorrow to clean the stainless rails and will try to take some pictures
of our set-up. Joe Launie, Commodore, Macavity # 365.
