Russ, I just replaced everything this year from the engine back and
moved the muffler after I cut out the whole lazerett out for better
access to my engine. I had the mod cut out but it wasn't enouph room
for me so I removed it all. I will take pictures for you today and email
them to you if you send me your email address. We replaced the exhaust
due to loose fittings and only about a quarter of an inch of a hole due
to carbon build up inside the pipes.

It's always something; at least it couldn't have happened at a better
time.
We finally got the boat launched yesterday, and while pulling into the
slip,
the exhaust note changed and there was no water coming out of the
exhaust.
It turns out the fitting where the exhaust hose clamps onto the exhaust
manifold snapped off. Luckily this is a separate part bolted on to the
back
of the exhaust manifold; the exhaust flange. My question is, is this a
single cast part with a round opening/neck that the hose clamps onto, or
is
it a cast threaded part with a round opening that a pipe is thread into
(1981 model C-38)? According to the Torresen website, it is a threaded
opening. Unfortunately, because it was late in the day, I couldn't get
a
good look at it, but the neck didn't seem to be as long as what is shown
in
Torresen's picture. I am hoping that just the pipe snapped, and not the
flange. It sure would be nice not to have to spend $81.07, plus
shipping,
and instead just go to the local hardware and buy a section of pipe. If
it
is just the pipe that snapped, what kind of pipe should be used? If
anyone
as any experience with this, please let me know. Thanks.
Sincerely,

Hello Russ,
It's been many years since I replaced my exhaust but I seem to remember
that the exhaust from engine to riser is just threaded pipe.
I swore that if/when my exhaust fails again I will fabricate the pipe
and riser from welded stainless. In my opinion, iron and steel don't
belong on a salt water cooled exhaust system but on the positive side,
plumbing pipe sure is cheap if you don't also need to replace the iron
riser and manifold flange.
I ended up replacing everything except the muffler from the engine
exhaust manifold to the thru-hull in the aft anchor locker, including
the rubber hose and check valve. Only my muffler is original.
