[C38] Pedestal Steering woes

I need some advice from those of you who have replaced components of their
steering system.
My old Edson steering pedestal has looked ugly since I bought Que Linda 10
years ago and I have always wanted to replace it with a new one. When I
bent the clutch cable at the pedestal, I started disassembling the system.
The old pedestal was mounted on a 2.5" riser which allowed the idler
(sheaves or pulleys) assembly to sit up inside the riser. This allowed a
fair lead back to the 360 radial drive mounted on the rudder shaft. I had
hoped to use the old idler assembly but the steel base that the idler were
mounted on had literally dissolved into sheets of paper.
The new Edson pedestal is the same height (up to the wheel shaft) as the old
pedestal with the riser. But since there is little room to move the radial
drive lower on the shaft, I planned to get a new riser and new idler
assembly. The only problem is that Edson doesn't make an idler assy that
fits up in the riser anymore. I think my only options are to try to lower
the radial drive on the shaft down to the stuffing box, build my own riser,
try to rig some sheaves so that the cable is redirected from the idler to
the radial drive, or try to find another pedestal manufacturer.
Any experience that I could use would be appreciated.
