Russ,  I just "re-bedded" mine last weekend.  To remove completely would be 
quite a job, but to re-bed takes about 2-3 days.  There is a top plate to 
the strut bedded into the boat's sked about 5-6 inches up from the exterior. 
We simply removed all the FG around the strut using a long shank (12-15 
inches) 1/4 drill and refilled the void with West Systems epoxy mixed with 
silica.  The top strut plate will hold the strut firmly in place while 
removing the FG and not screw up your shaft alignment.  If you want to know 
exactly how we did the repair, let me know and I'll write it up.
