Phil,
We're doing tons of last-minute preps for a 3-month RV tour across the U.S., beginning this Thursday--so I won't have time to photograph the boat. However, I can draw a diagram, which I believe should do the trick. Final note: make sure to measure all dimensions of the batteries you have in mind, as not all brands will fit into my case. Diagram to follow........

Glen,
I have been imagining doing the same thing with 6 volt batteries. I currently have 2 golf cart batteries in the same location. If you could take some photographs of how you fitted the 4 batteries into that space, it would help speed me along with my upgrade.

I removed the stock batteries & ground out the separater and outboard wall, then rebuilt the box with 1/4 plywood, completely fiberglassed. A wedge-shaped piece of hardwood was fitted between the box and the hull. By carefully measuring and arranging (they go into place only in the proper sequence--and come out the same way) I now have 4-6volt golf cart batteries, in a series/parallel, connected to a Guest switch. This provides exceptional charge/discharge characteristics and 440 ah capacity. A hardwood slat secured over each pair holds them in place, yet allows removal of the caps for servicing. Together with a 90A alternator and 2 large solar panels, it served all our needs through the '97/98 season in Baja California--despite some 3,000 wild fires burning through Mexico and Central America, which reduced the sun to a silver disk in the overhead haze much of the time.
Good luck,
glen

I opened up the battery trays under the aft dinette seat to allow two group
31 batteries. I now use a tie down of aluminum angle connected to the
trays with wing nuts instead of the original web tie downs which no longer
fit.
A nice thing about this original location is it's central to the boat, low
center of gravity, and short cable leads to the alternator and starter.
Two group 31 batteries hold a lot of energy.
