Phil,

Since my mast was down for work, I took off all the deck plates and
cleaned out the openings until I saw the chain plates removing all of
the previously applied silicone until the cut outs were as clean as I
could get them. Then I used my caulk gun and a tube of 4200 to fill the
openings, then using a piece of copper wire I "stirred" and poked as
best I could to remove any pockets and air bubbles. After satisfied
with that I put a liberal amount on the deck and topped off the openings
before resseting the deck plates and slowly squeezed all the excess out
the sides and around the portion of the chain plate sticking above the
deck as i tightened down the screws then lastly cleaning up the excess.
I did this for all 6 chain plates. Just had a horrible thought for you
to think about: Is it possible the leak is originating somewhere else
on the deck or a port and migrating until it hits the chain plate then
coming out inside the cabinet?

Steve,

Which chainplates did you rebed? Did you remove the chainplate or the
deck cover? I used a polysulfide sealant on my aft lower shroud
chainplates and have had no success in stopping a leak around the
inboard of the two bolts which hold the chainplate weldment to the deck.
How hard do you think it would be to seal around a bolt head?
Apparently I haven't gotten it right even though I allowed it to harden
before torqueing the nut down. I would have liked to have been able to
remove the chainplate and completely inspect it but it looks like one
would need to take the cabinet apart to get at it.

I think I will try the 4200.

Rick,

I just did mine on Peregrine and used 3M 4200, so that in the future it
could easily be dug out and redone when the time comes. Has been
working great for the last two months and we have had lots of rain.

A while back someone mentioned re-bedding the chain plates. Was there a
consensus on what to use? I seem to recall it was marine epoxy but
don't remember which one. Any thoughts?

Rascal has stains on the bulkheads from water leaks but no structural
problems. Also some of the bolts through the cabin top leak as well.
Fortunately in SoCal we don't get much rain but the moisture from fog
drips through as well.

I just got a call from the boat yard working on my mast and they told me
that it looks like they need yet another day to correct the previously
incorrect spreader installation. They said that the aft edge of the
foil was installed pointing forward. I dont have any good pictures of
the spreaders but the ones I do have and my memory seem to tell me that
the spreaders are symetrical in shape and do not have a leading and
trailing edge design. Any comments or wisdom? I find it hard to
believe Catalina didnt know how to install spreaders. Thanks.

If you are discussing the mounting of the chainplates, then you need to
look at the loads, and you will see that they require substantial
backing. On our boats the mids and uppers tie to a bar which is
fastened via stainless rods (in the hanging locker on starboar) to
spread the load. On the port they tie inot the head bulkhead. And
epoxying the areas to prevent rot and to help ensure the strain is
handled is OK.

At the deck pass through, though, the chain plate ends are unsupported,
and shrouds alternately receive the heavy load on the windward side and
release on the leeward so they tend to flex. Using expoy is doomed to
fail, because of this flexing. Use silicon caulk, such as Sikaflex or
Life caulk around the deck plates to prevent leakage and allow flex
without cracking.

Les H

Hi Steve;

My spreaders are airfoil shaped. The blunt edge goes forward, like an
airplane wing.
