[C38] Holding Tank

Hi Larry,
My tank failed during a rough passage back in 2002 and I replaced it with
the identical Ronco tank which is still in production.
Instead of glassing in the new tank like the old one was, I made a frame of
aluminum angle that allows the tank to be removed easily if I ever need to
access the forward keel bolts, etc. I wrapped the new tank in thin plastic
sheeting and after the tank was in place, I used a long piece of plastic
ice maker line attached to a can of Great Stuff to spray under the middle
of the tank to give support against the hull. The plastic keeps the Great
Stuff foam from sticking to the tank. The holding tanks are flat on the
bottom but our hulls are compound round so without the foam, they are not
supported except on the corners.
Another thing we did was replace the original rubber hoses with the new
white odor proof plastic hoses. They are hard to work with but last forever
and won't permeate odors like the original rubber type hoses. I used a
heat gun to soften the ends which helps greatly to get the hoses over the
barbs of the toilet and holding tank. My deck pump out fitting was Zymac
and corroded through so I replaced it with a quality stainless fitting when
I replaced the vent hose to the new holding tank.
Our boat has a macerator pump and we installed a "tee" between the
macerator pump and thru-hull. The "tee" is connected to a piece of hose
with an end cap. With this hose, we can remove the sanitary end cap and
operate the macerator pump to fill portable plastic cans to empty our
holding tank. We can then dinghy the portable tank to a shore toilet from
any anchorage without having to move the 38 to a pump out station or
pollute the water by using the thru-hull. It's an easy, inexpensive
addition if you already have the macerator pump.
