Ken,
My experience has been the same...go slow and use neutral then reverse. I have also used forward with quick rudder adjustments and very quick short bursts forward to reposition the boat before continuing to back. When doing any hard rudder adjustments beware as mentioned in an earlier post from Tom T. that the stops for the wheel are wood blocks and can easily be jumped or broken resulting in no steerage.

Subject: [C38] performance
I recently bought a '83 Catalina and I am in the process of getting to know the boat. It has the standard 21 hp Universal and two blade prop. My big problem is when I am trying to back out of my slip the stern moves hard to the port no mater which way I turn the wheel. My slip is pretty tight length and width wise.
Is there some way I can get more power and control without getting a bigger engine? What's the best way to turn the helm when I back up in a tight area to keep the stern swinging to the left?
