[C38] Jib lead car positions

Bob,
Did I meet you last year at PIB in early August? I am REALLY terrible at
names and have forgotten the name of the person I met there, also on a C-38.
About how far aft is the car, generally, when you go to weather? Do you
ever use the forward/outboard tracks?

Sincerely,

Hi Russ;

Come join me in the Lake Erie Inter-club Cruise. It is one of the greatest
racing events on the Great Lakes. Basically the Eastern end of the Lake -
Five middle distance races, four port to port.

I set my leads based on the wind. Before the start I go to weather and
adjust the lead so all the telltales lift at the same time. Forward if the
lowers lift first and vice versa. Do this for each side as the wind
frequently turns (shear) as you move higher off the water. I really sheet
the genoa in close (at least in rather flat seas) as Hiawatha loves to
point.

You've probably seen my previous posts about getting into racing this year
(LOOK OUT!). Anyway, what I would like to know is where should I set the
cars for the jib sheets in different wind conditions/sailing angles? I know
where I usually set them, but I don't know how correct they are for getting
optimum speed. I have standard dacron sails, and my jib is a 150 roller
furling head sail with the protective UV cover sewn on.

Thanks in advance for all of the good advice.

Sincerely,
Russ Duff
