[C38] Bomar Hatches

Hi, All,
I think Bomar still builds them. I replaced the head hatch on JACE
with one of the new ones. The old one was pretty badly munged up from
apparently having a line caught in it and had warped. These hatches
were cast aluminum I believe. The new ones are definitely cast aluminum
with powdercoating. The old one came off fairly cleanly, and I had only
one bit of the fiberglass lift a bit, which I epoxied back and the
covered the border area with fresh epoxy prior to bedding the new hatch.

The kind gentlemen at San Diego Marine exchange worked with me (as I am
somewhat of a klutz type when it comes to construction) to help me
obtain the correct hatch from Bomar. Unfortunately I now longer
remember the price I paid, and a couple of years ago I had a system
crash, loosing all the email, which had not been backed up, thanks to
Microsoft putting it in a hidden directory. However if you check the
Bomar website, you should be able to find the correct dimension.

Replacing the hatch was the correct answer for my situation. The dogs
and hinge pins are those expanding spring metal things on the original
hatch. I don't remember seeing what the new one uses. Those pins are
supposed to push out. I could have never gotten the pins out on Jace
because the hinge pins had been warped up aout 45 degrees at the
junction between the hatch cover and the hatch, even if the hatch frame
had been perfectly flat. The initial damage was done prior to my
purchase of the boat, but I hadn't noticed it. Neither did the
surveyor. Oh, well. Don't know that I would have changed anything
anyway. Got a fair price and now have had the boat for several years.

Anyway, a call to San Diego Marine Exchange (They are on the WEB as
well), or better still Sailnet since they host us, can get you some help
in finding a replacement, and maybe some help in fixing the old hatches.
They have always been helpful to me. You may have a local boat yard
that can provide assistance. Be warned, though that cast aluminum will
not take impact well if it is concentrated in an area smaller than a
couple of cm (i.e. point impacts). If you choose to use a pin punch to
remove the pins, check that it is not a sharp point, but rather flat so
it puts the force on the pin circumference. A point punch will just
expand the pins in place and make them even harder to remove. A clamp
type push might work better. Maybe you could modify a C clamp to
provide the pressure, with a pin or cutoff piece of round stock to
provide the punch, and a hole drilled in a block for the opposing side.
There is probably a specialized tool that would do the job. The dogs
are available, and I found some new spin-ons at a local chandlery which
fit the front hatch. The dogs for the Bomars are probably available in
some obscure bin in a local chandlery there.

Les H
