[C38] auto prop or max prop

I replaced a Martec folding prop with a 3 blade MaxProp about 5 years ago. I have the Yanmar 3GM30 engine. The main reason I chose the MaxProp was that I had friend who got me a good discount on it. The Martec that I removed had too much pitch since the PO got it off of a J35. The correct pitch on the MaxProp allowed me to reach the redline and in a pinch go faster but I also cruise slower at the same RPM due to the change in pitching.

The MaxProp does back up extremely well and stops the boat quickly. It didn't eliminate the prop walk like I had hoped, though. On the down side, you have to saw off the end of the prop shaft to mount the MaxProp, which eliminates change back to another type of prop. You also have to haul the boat and lubricate the prop annually. That is a good time to replace the cone zinc which is easy to find at most marine stores. It is a good idea to take care when engaging the transmission.

I can't comment on relative efficiency of the 2 props since the condition of surface(grass, barnacles, etc) of the blades has far more influence on the speed.
