[C38] bilge pump wiring

Both of my bilge pumps are wired separately to the batteries with there
own control switches and fuses. When you buy a bilge pump it has
directions on how to correctly wire it up. I have two house banks so I
wired on pump to one house the other to the other house bank. If you
need directions go to west marine and pull out the directions on a bilge
pump and copy it down.

One thing we try to keep in mind, I, Larry, am 6-3 about 250 and 63
years
young. Now it's pretty hard for me to fit into some of those dam small
places, that's why we have Steve. Steve is about 5-8, 165 and 45 years
young, actually we are going to put him on a diet soon. LOL So, if you
don't' have a Steve, well what can I say? LOL

I was talking to a dock mate about an accident here on the Chesapeake
where a boat got hit by a tanker ( no one was hurt just the owners
pocket book with fines) when they couldn't start their engine because
the key had broken off in the slot. He told me he has an emergency start
button no key required. I did not want to appear dumb as he owns a Cal
33. So does anyone have this system and if so is it easy to install?

Thanks in advance

We just discovered, this weekend, that our bilge pump does now go on if
our
batteries are set to the house. Is this typical? We really don't think
it
is but thought we had a bad bilge pump until we set the selector to All
and
then it kicked right on. It seems to me that the bilge pump should be
independent of any selection of batteries. Any input here?

Mine is wired directly to the battery through the float switch. I also
installed a bypass switch on the electrical panel so that I can turn it
on
and pump the last bit of water out that the pump won't get using just
the
float switch.

Hi William,

To install an emergency starter button all you have to do is connect a
momentary button switch between the + hot wire to the starter switch and
the connection going to the starter relay. This will energize the
starter
solenoid but not the lift pump which runs from the "accessory"
connection
of the switch.

Most diesels will run with a bypass switch without the lift pump running
if
they don't have any air leaks in the fuel lines and filters. It is
dangerous to run without the lift pump because the smallest leak will
cause
a loss of injector prime causing the engine to stall but if your system
is
sealed very well, the engine could run forever without the aid of the
lift
pump as long as the fuel filters were kept very clean.

I run both of my bilge pumps directly from the house batteries through a
dedicated switch on the nav. panel.

One of my projects is to fix some of my deck water leaks. I was getting
brown water dripping around the port aft lower shroud chainplate, more
specifically from the inboard bolt which attaches it to the deck. I had
tried sealing it from the outside without removing the chainplate. The
chainplate is a complex weldment that fits up under the deck and is
bolted
(4 bolts) to a small plywood bulkhead which is bolted via 2 heavy
aluminum
angles to a shelf below the cabinet. I quickly figured out that I
would
have to drill out plugs which hold the face of the cabinet on. This was
actually easier than I thought it would be. There are 2 screws in the
head
that hold the face in place also. Then I had to remove the bulkhead in
order to lower the chainplate through the deck. The hardest part was
removing the screws that hold the shelves in place. Also the bulkheads
are
tightly wedged in under the trim strip that hides the hull to deck
bolts.

I got the chainplates out ? both sides were leaking. Between the outer
fiberglass layer on top and the hull liner were two layers of wood. The
upper layer was about ? inch thick and the lower one was closer to ?
inch
thick. The upper layer was wet but not delaminated, but the lower layer
was
solid as a rock and dry. I plan to put a vacuum cleaner hose on the
chainplate hole and try to suck the moisture out. Any other ideas?
Then my
plan is to dremel out the core and fill it with thickened epoxy. After
resurfacing the hole, I plan to reinstall the chainplate using 4200.
Again,
any comment? Questions? The chainplate looked good though a bit
stained.
