[C38] single line reefing

Max, on my Catalina 30 I have single line reefing with all the lines ran
aft. It works great but it also has a Dutchman flaking system. On the 38
I have a hook up front and the aft reefing lines on the aft part of the
boom . I didn't put single line reefing on the 38 because it is a loose
footed main and I don't feel that the single line reefing would work as
well with the main not being flaked like on the 30. If you would like I
could send you some pics of how the 30 is rigged.

Max,

I have limited experience with reefing, but I do have a single line
reefing
on Que Linda. I installed a ball bearing block on the side of the mast
at
the gooseneck like you mentioned. I believe that I would have to take
out
the aft lower shrouds before I damaged this block. This block directs
the
line from aft on the boom up to a ring on the luff and down to a block
at
the base of the mast. The lowest that the ring in the luff can go is
down
to the turning block on the side of the mast at the gooseneck. A friend
has
a new Beneteau 393 and his reefing line goes forward inside the boom to
a
block in the front end of the boom and up to the reefing ring and then
down
through an eye on the mast near the gooseneck.

There was an article in Cruising World month before last where this
older
guy led the reefing line back to the reefing clew first then forward to
blocks on the forward end of the boom. This way he pulled the clew down
before pulling the tack down.

I reefed once last year and it did OK. Our main is relatively small so
the
forces on the lines are somewhat manageable. I was able to reef and
shake
it from the cockpit since my halyard is led aft also. My sailing is
only in
protected waters of the inside passage and this system is probably
adequate.
I think that the best system uses a reef hook at the gooseneck with the
clew
reef lead back to the cockpit. Unfortunately this requires the crew to
leave the cockpit.

Hi,

I'm in the process of leading all my lines from the mast to the cockpit,
and
was thinking if I could take advantage of this and also install single
reefing lines for the mainsail and lead them after. Is this OK for this
boats???

I was planning to use the original reefing lines, install a cheek blocks
on
the side of the the boom, as close to the gooseneck as possible, lead
the
the line trough this block, then up to the reefing ring, down to a mast
collar block and back to cockpit.

I was checking the Harken kit for small boats, but the cheek block has
to be
attached to the mast, and I remember a Dehler 41 with this block
destroyed
because of the boom angle. I guess this won't happen if install it on
the
boom.

As always, any toughts, comments or recommendations will be
appreciated!!!!

Sorry I entered the single line reefing discussion late and do not know
what was already said. But I read an article in the April 2008 Sail
Magazine titled "Geezer Think Smart" the author describes and diagrams
how to make a working single line system. If this has not been brought
up already I will attempt to share it with you all. While I am here has
anyone had problems with line twist on the main sheet? If yes how did
you fix it.

Thanks Bill
Flying Goose.
