[C38] Mast Information

I probably mentioned this a couple of months ago, so I may be repeating
myself.

I got an estimate for repainting my mast from a competent marine service
company in Seattle. The representative looked at my mast and commented that
I had a bend above the lower spreaders directly in line with the steaming
light. He added that this a place where masts often fail. It looked like
the mast might have been dropped at one time because it appeared to have
both a dent in the aft side and a bend at this point. Since painting a mast
is so expensive now, I contacted LeFiell about a new mast. Our boat is a
1980 model with a stainless steel track on the back of the mast that "c"
shaped slides run up and down. Rodney at LeFiell did not think that my mast
was a LeFiell product because of the way that the track was attached to the
mast. He said that Catalina may have made their own masts from extruded
sections on earlier boats. He also explained that the bend could have been
where sections of extrusion were joined together.

Whatever the reason for the bend, I now have a new LeFiell mast which I hope
to install this week. It cost me $5725 with me reusing my tangs and shrouds
plus $900 in shipping to Everett, WA. Needless to say it looks much better
than my 28 year old mast and has more modern spreaders and lights. The old
mast was not stepped in the center of the boat and I intend to do my best to
place the new mast step in the middle of the cabin floor.

Got the info, here it is for future reference:

Le Fiell Manufacturing Company

A fellow there, Don Averill has a Catalina 38 and guess what? He's a member
of the same yacht club I am. Max Soto apparently has chatted with him in
the past and David Epstein says he's a great guy, very knowledgeable about
the masts, etc.
