Ken

My fairway is narrow and I'm in a double slip with my boat to the port.
When I leave I have to back to the starboard and go forward to the
port. In order to do this I take a 60 foot line and loop it to the rear
most dock cleat on the finger dock to my starboard. I tie one end to my
starboard rear cleat on the boat and the other end also returns to the
boat where it is loosely tied to a stantion near the helm. The line is
kept loose at the beginning. When we are about half way out of the slip
the line becomes taunt and it begins to pull the stern to the starboard.
The back of the boat continues to circle to the starboard at the
radius set by the line. Too big, we pull the line in a little. Too
short and we let the line out a little. But the back of the boat is
always in your control because of the line. Even with the prop walk
pulling the back of the boat to the port the line pulls it to the
starboard. Then when you are finished backing out and want to go
forward you untie the line on the stantion and throw it towards the dock
then grab the other end of the line and pull it aboard.

But when there is very little wind we just walk the boat out of the slip.
