[C38] scupper drains (alden)

Thanks for all the advise. Yes I removed the lazerette floor last year
for better access . After reading your emails I guess my boat never had
a scupper system since I purchased it. I can look down the holes from
the cockpit strait to the water. Is it worth putting a scupper valve or
just keep using my sea cock wooden plugs?

Max,
I have seen several C38s without the butterfly valve you are looking
for. Instead, there is a 1/4" pipe plug located on top of the
thermostat housing for the internal cooling system.
Here is what I have done to deal with the "burp." I removed the lower
butterfly valve at the lower part of the engine and replaced it with a 1

inch nipple and cap (1/4" pipe). I now fill my coolant through the
nipple by pumping the coolant into the system with a cheap drill pump
that you can buy at about any hardware store. By filling from the
bottom-up, I do not get the the bubble as all air flows up and out the
butterfly valve on top of the thermostat housing. Due to the faulty
installation of my new heat exchanger that left a hole in it... I
probably filled the coolant system at least 10 times over the last two
months and have not had the burp problem.

The good thing for Max is he can use the butterfly he is removing from
the bottom of the engine on the thermostat housing.

How the heck does one even get close to the scupper hoses? From the
port side lazarette// seat engine access I have a water heater that will

have to be removed and then I still don't think I can get my upper body
through the hole to reach the hose clamps on the drains. I am 5'11" and
175 pounds. Has anyone ever got to those hoses?

You need to do the "remove the sail locker floor" modification first. I
did
it a few years ago; it's easy but scary.

If I remember right you can route your drains to the opposite side of
the
boat to solve the problem but I believe that if that is done then our
boats
dont meet some offshore requirement for the time it takes to drain the
cockpit.

So I have a question for the list.
1. how do you keep water from coming in from the cockpit drains?
My drains are strait down and it seems 6 kts or above water seems to
rush in, I use wood plugs to stop this because we are always at 7kts. I
am tired of putting in wooden through hole plugs in is there valves
people put in or is my boat just to ass heavy or is this just a common
problem with the c-38? Does any one have a fix?
