Hi William,

The name of the discount parts house is Yacht Power Products at 727-822-2628 in St. Petersburg Florida.

Having said that, you probably don't need a new transmission. These Hurth transmissions are very reliable but they are also very sensitive to adjustment of the shift cable. The cable bellcrank where the shift cable attaches has to be exactly neutral when the shifter at the binnacle is set to neutral or what you are experiencing can occur.

To adjust the cable, disconnect the cable to the bellcrank on the starboard side of the transmission accessed through the quarter berth. Crank the engine at the dock and manually change through the F-N-R settings by reaching your hand to the bellcrank and twisting it. If the transmission performs satisfactorily without the cable attached, you know your problem is the cable adjustment.

While the cable is still detached, look at the bellcrank and check that it is exactly perpendicular to the cable if the cable was still attached. You may want to scratch a reference line across the end of the bellcrank shaft so you can "eyeball" the shaft to the bellcrank if you need to make adjustments.

I have also heard of having to loosen the four bolts that hold the bellcrank shaft to the transmission to adjust the shifting. The slightest movement of that plate will also effect shifting.

If you are satisfied the problem is in the cable, have someone shift through the shifter range from the binnacle while you watch below to see if your cable is operating properly and the same distance for R and F. If everything is adjusted properly, manually check that the transmission is in neutral and then you should be able to put the binnacle lever in neutral and have the cable on the transmission slide right back into the hole on the bellcrank. If you can't, adjust the cable until it does slide in easily.

While we are talking about these transmissions, if they hold in reverse or forward under load, even if you have to manually shift them as described above, and the transmission isn't leaking fluid, you have a good transmission.

One marvel about our transmissions is that the input shaft has spiral grooves attaching the driven plates of the clutch pack so that once the transmission is shifted from neutral, the torque of the engine tries to twist the spiral grooves of the input shaft making the plates bind very tight with very little cable pressure. If you have driven a standard transmission car, you will remember that even a small car has a fairly hard clutch pedal pressure but our transmissions shift with only finger pressure because that spiral input shaft torques the clutch pack with incredible pressure. Pretty smart idea but it also makes the shifter cable adjustments very critical.

I hope this helps.

Hi Tom Bill from Flying Goose. I thought I archived the discount name but I can't find it. Could you help me out? I think I need a new transmission. It will shift ok from reverse to neutral if it is not to warm. i.e. Just leaving the dock the engine will shift pretty good not great but if has run a n hour or so once in reverse will not shift back without shutting down engine. Any ideas ?
Thanks
Bill
