[C38] Cutless Bearing Replacement

Jonathan, You definitely do not have to pull the shaft to replace the
cutlass bearing. You pull the prop, slip a sleeve over the shaft and press
the bearing forward until it is clear of the strut. You notice I said
press, not hammer! The first time I watched the yard remove the bearing
with a hammer and about 4 years later, I had to rebed the strut. After the
bearing is clear of the strut, use a grinder to split the bearing (carefully
so you don't nick the shaft) and remove the halves from the shaft. I made a
tool (a wheel puller) to press the old bearing out and press the new bearing
in which is shown in a pic attached. The sleeve is a section of EMT,
expanded at one end to match the ID of the strut. Two 3/8's threaded rods
were used as the jacking device and the end plates were fabricated from 3/4
aluminum plate, which you can machine with wood tools.
Also I was able to remove the shaft with out dropping the rudder. With
the cutlass removed and the rudder turned very slightly I was able to slide
the shaft by hand past the rudder.
Good luck, Steve O
