[C38] Rudder

Hi Larry,

The previous owner of our boat suffered a knock-down on the way back from
Hawaii and bent the rudder shaft.  He had to sail about 1000 miles with only
two or three degrees of rudder movement.  When they took the rudder out,
they said they found some electrolysis on the rudder shaft though I would
think this would lead to breaking and not contribute to bending the shaft.
He got a new rudder from Catalina (about 10 years ago).  I've heard of
others (with different boats) grinding the fiberglass back on the rudder,
replacing just the shaft and reglassing.  I'd sure rather have a new rudder
if possible. 

I think you're doing the right thing inspecting it.  I plan to drop my
rudder for inspection (at least part way) before we go off shore again.

Good Morning Catalina 38 Owners; we currently have Hassle in Windward Yacht
Center in Marina Del Rey for some bottom work, painting etc.  A thought
occurred to me to have the rudder dropped and checked while on the hard.
The manager called yesterday and told me the rudder was off and there is
some rust on the shaft, he said that for offshore it's probably ok but in as
much as we are doing the Trans Pac in June/July of this year I might want to
take a look at it.  I'm going down there today to check it out but, should I
decide to replace it any ideas where I can get a new one?  Seems to me
someone did this not too long ago.  Also, anything in particular I should
know about rudders?  LOL  Yes, I am searching the Knowledge Base here.
