[C38] Dock Lines

Larry, I agree with Joe Launie- 3 strand nylon line gives the best
combination of strength and stretch, stretch is very inportant. The bigger
the line the less the stretch. In a 12 foot wide slip, we use two bow
lines, two stern lines (to keep us centered in the slip) and two spring
lines. The lines are all different lengths. The most chaffing takes place
at the dock cleats. So as the longer line wears, it is rotated to the next
shorter line until it reaches the shortest position, and discarded. A new
long line (the spring) is purchased each time the longest line is cut for
the next smallest line. This is a long answer for the obvious.
Cheers, Steve Orton

  Larry,
We prefer 1/2 inch nylon so they will have some stretch and not
transmit loads to the boat. Chaffing is easy - just slip clear plastic
tubing over the lines. Joe Launie/Macavity

What is the recommended size for dock lines for our boats? West Marine has
them on sale and I was thinking about buying some new ones, the ones we have
now are pretty chaffed, any hints on avoiding chaffing?
