[C38] Dock Lines

I agree with using the 1/2" dock lines. We keep our boat in St. Petersburg Florida and in hurricane season, June 1st to Nov 30, we are required to have double lines.

I used to use 3/4" nylon lines for our main lines and a set of 1/2" lines for the seasonal extra lines until hurricane Dennis grazed by us and I saw many boats that were damaged because the 3/4" lines tore out cleats because they didn't have enough stretch. Even the boats without cleat damage got quite a pounding from the surf when the lines went slack to tight with wave action.

By the way, we have seen people use old halyards for dock lines. I know we all know better in this group but you should have seen those boats bounce and jerk when the winds got up. Dacron just doesn't stretch so interesting things happen. Very interesting to watch too when you can't do anything else. Once the storm hits, it's a little late to decide to change dock lines. lol

We had one idiot on the dock who chained his boat to the dock with a short chain heavy chain so his boat wouldn't get away. When the surge came in, he almost lost his boat before someone got the chain cut away. He had a very heavy CSY 42 and if his boat sank it could have taken the dock with it. If Dennis had hit us directly instead of a glancing blow, I'm sure his boat and the dock would have been lost.

Pardon the ramble but I thought you true sailors might have enjoyed that little story. Sadly, it's a true story.

Larry,
We prefer 1/2 inch nylon so they will have some stretch and not transmit loads to the boat. Chaffing is easy - just slip clear plastic tubing over the lines. Joe Launie/Macavity
