[C38] cockpit drains (alden)

Relocate water heater to gain access to stern. I relocated my water heater under the galley sink. It barely fits but it makes access to steering and drive shaft possible. I had to remove the galley sink and put the water heater in from the top. It sits as close as possible to the port side and just clears the thru hull for the galley sink. There is no extra room there but it will fit and that space is not very useful anyway. With water heater gone, I enlarged the access hole in the port locker slightly and access now is pretty good. I replaced my rudder and steering cables without any access problems. My port locker has a liner that is against the hull so removal of the liner wound not imporve access on my boat (1983).

INTEMPERANCE has been hacked all to pieces. We've got a hatch in the
cockpit floor right above the engine. The floor and inboard wall of the
sailing locker has been cut away and replaced with a steel frame and
removable boards. Plus we have a factory access hatch on the starboard
quarterberth.

None the less it's a complete pain in the ass to do even the simplest
tasks on the engine or anything else stuffed back there. In fact, one of
my primary reasons for converting to a tiller is because god help us if
something ever went wrong with the wheel in a tight spot -- we'd be dead
and buried before I could ever crawl in their and do anything about it!

None the less, the mods are helpful. The previous owner solve the cracking
access hatch problem by laminating a piece of Georgia Highway Department
roadside onto the plastic hatchcover. He did it with silicone, which
lasted a while. I just re-did it with 3M bedding compound. My main
complaint is the hinges and rim collect sand. (We're on and off by dinghy
from a sand beach and have two kids and a Newfoundland dog.)  But the
hatch absolutely needed because sometime in the boat's past some genius
replaced the dual engine control with a single, so the only way to kill
the engine is to open the hatch, grab the throttle and pull it back. (I'll
fix this when remove the pedestal and remount the engine controls.)

It's also handy for light and access. When ever I have to go in their
beyond checking the oil I open everything up - front door, quarterberth
hatch, sailing locker, top hatch.
