[C38] Heat exchange

Thanks, Tom. I finished the heat exchanger swap out (sweat out) and ran
the engine at the slip in gear at 2500 rpm for 1 hour. The temp stayed
between 165 and 170 with tons of water pouring out of the exhaust. Used to have
a trickle. Before it would have hit 200 in 10 minutes. Tomorrow I am
going to head out early under power and confirm. Swapping out for that
larger 3" exchanger was priceless advise. Seems the thermostat is working fine
so I am going to fly as is for the time being.

Thanks to the Cat38 gang for fixing my problem.

Hello Bob,

Going the "whole 9 yards" is usually a good idea but have you priced the
thermostat yet?

An easy way to test any thermostat is to drop it in a sauce with water and
boil it on your range. You can watch it as the water heats up and if the
thermostat opens before the water boils, you have good thermostat.

I have almost finished installing the new heat exchanger on "Bolero" in
San Diego. Just made my third run to the marine hardware store. I will let
you know how it works out. I should probably go the whole 9 yards and
replace the impeller and the thermostat too.

So I"ve been reading all the info about heat exchangers and feeling prety
smug as everything looks good on Impulse. I was going to change the oil
yesterday and started the engine to warm things up, poking around as a good
obsessive compulsive will I noticed a small leak where the rubber outflow
hose connects to the heat exchanger. Ok you guessed it one little wiggle and
there I was holding a rotted off piece and muttering curses, while at the
same time giving thanks for this site and all the info. available here. Of
course we were planing one more trip however it will suffer only minamal
delay thanx to this site.
I noticed I think it was Steve mentioning 6 knots at 1800 rpm I run at
2200 most of the ti9me what prop do you use?
