Steve I use Trinidad Sr on both the 30 and 38. The 30 went 6 years with
out repainting just bottom scrubbing the 38 is on its 2nd year . I send
a diver down 3 times a year but you have to remember I spend 85% of my
time in fresh water so its just slime removal. The Trinidad sr seems to
last longer than the ablative I used to use on the 30 that I had to do
every year. Oh and I like red.

Peregrine is on the hard and we are fairing the keel and sanding the
bottom, I'd love to hear recommendations from others on bottom paint.
Ablative or Hard, which brand and your experiences with them. Thanks.

Hi Steve,

I've been using Petit Trinidad SR and I'm really happy with it, but I'm
in
So. Cal. I've heard that it's usually best to ask people in the area
where
you keep your boat as different paints work better on different fouling
creatures.

I use Petit Trinidad SR as well in San Francisco. I am making 30 months
between bottom jobs and it still looks decent when I haul. I also have
a
diver on a regular schedule and I scrub it alot as well with a deck
brush at
the dock so it takes abuse very well.

Steve,

I know that racing is important to you so I wouldn't recommend the
ablative
(soft) paint because you can't legally scrub the algae off the bottom
between races. I tried Pettit Vivid 2 years ago but it didn't seem to
offer
the barnacle protection of the ablative paint. The Vivid paint also
seemed
to scrub off though I know that some California owners scrub theirs.

Based on this I would also recommend the Pettit Trinidad (hard) paint.
It
can be scrubbed responsibly. The down side of course Is that it must be
removed after several years as the coats build up.

Steve,
I have used Vivid for about 6 years, in the San Diego area, with 2 years
between haul outs. Vivid is rated as a hard paint, but when you lightly
scrub the bottom the water turns blue, so that tells me the paint must
rate
between a hard finish and ablative. We scrub every month during the
summer
and 2-3 months during the cold season. To get a nice smooth bottom job,
we
hand sand lightly, just once over, using a flexible auto body sand tool
(about 3 x 17 inches) with a 80 grit paper. To apply the paint it takes
two
workers, one to apply the paint with a roller usually in the vertical
direction followed immediately by the second person with a tipping
applicator in the horizontal direction. This gives a finish very close
to a
spray job. The Vivid being softer, sands easily, eliminating the build
up
and flows well during the application process. I must admit I don't
have
experience with the hard finish paints though. I will be painting my
boats
bottom this June after it arrives in Olympia on a truck. I need to do
some
further investigation into paint types because of the different sea
environment. So I will be interested in what you pick for paint.
