I use bungee and netting. Attached are some pics. Then I have a cargo
net for the v berth when offshore . Tell your wife if things are not a
mess after sailing you havnt sailed. The Bungee and netting seems to
work for the side shelves.

Good Morning All,

First Mate Dorothy is interested in using the salon shelves for storage
of items but does not like seeing things fly across the salon when
things get rough.

Has anyone added a bungee net, doors, railing, etc. to the shelves to
make them more functional in rough weather? It does happen occasionally
here in San Diego!

There is a lot of space there but it's completely open.

Thanks!

We always secured anything on the salon shelves in boxes or in other low
locations in rough seas. The only thing that stayed on my shelves in
rough seas was my SSB radio which I had mounted on the upper shelf just
forward of the nav station and it was fastened by temporary mounts which
were hard to see when the SSB and mount were removed.

One reason it was easy for us to empty the shelves was we never kept
much on them in the first place.

One problem you may find with the shelves is that as they came from
Catalina the upper shelves were fairly poorly supported and will not
hold much weight. If you intend to make cargo use of them, you may want
to also try to figure out an attractive way to reinforce and support
them.

A drop in fabricated shelf liner that would provide a lip higher than
the existing shelf lip may provide strength as well as a way to keep
things secure while healing and bouncing on those fun rides which
sometimes provoke serious but indiscernible talks to Neptune as you lean
over the leward side, an action that is sometimes called "chumming."

We also use baskets on the shelves when cruising, my wife found some
nice wicker with a cloth liner three fit perfectly on the bottom shelf.
