Yes, Tom, it is mounted level with the valve flapper hinged at the top and closed when no exhaust is going through.

Max and Steve, I installed a 2” check valve to replace the existing 1 5/8” check valve.  As I mentioned before, the old check valve wasn’t functional.  I think the purpose of the check valve is to prevent waves from behind from surging up the exhaust and entering the exhaust manifold.  Mine was probably a carryover from the exhaust system from the original Universal engine.

Hi Phil,

Is your new check valve hung level in a "normally closed" position with the hinge at the top requiring the exhaust to open it?

Dear List,

I finally finished my exhaust system upgrade on my Yanmar 3GM30 from 1 5/8” to 2.”  I replaced the check valve downstream from the water lift muffler.  The flapper in the old valve was lying at the bottom of the valve unattached to anything.  I like the more relaxed sound of my exhaust now.

However, the new 2” check valve clanks when the engine is running.  I suspect that the bronze flapper is banging against the upper surface of the check valve rather than the surface that it closes against.  I suppose that I could put a drop of sealant on the downside surface of the flapper to deaden the noise.  Has anyone else encounter this annoying clanking?  How did you solve it?
