[C38] Stereo Insatllation

Yes, we agree that that is a very clean way to have cockpit speakers
when we want them and that is what we are leaning toward. Dorothy likes
function over form and when we are daysailing and cruising I don't mind
that, but when we are racing I don't like the extra stuff in the pit.

Thanks!.................Jay

Jay, you may think about running wire out the cowl vents for the blower,
with male/female plugs and then hang speakers off the rail when you want
them and then remove them when you dont. That way the wire is hidden in
the vent and you dont have to drill any holes.

Steve

Thanks everyone for your recommendations and pics regarding stereo
installation. I really appreciate it. It looks like a previous owner
had mounted and removed a bracket afore the instrument panel for a
stereo or other piece of electronics and because there is easy access to
wiring I think we'll start there. Dorothy likes the idea of not cutting
holes for flush mount speakers in the cockpit but I have not found any
small enclosed speakers that will fit in the cubby holes. Has anyone
found micro speakers that fit in the cubby's or have you mounted
speakers to the railing? Seems a bit bulky for the C-38's pinched (but
beautiful) stern.

Jay,

Yes it does but with a caveat, My IPhone plugs into the unit, I can
play back songs through the radio but It will not charge the phone or
ipod when plugged into the unit. A screen warning comes up "not
supported or something to that effect" but it still works. If you go
with the Jensen (available at West Marine) be aware that the LED
backlight is blue and it is very bright, I had originally mounted it on
the face of the electrical panel, but moved it to the bulkhead location
because the blue light was a big distraction in the cockpit at night.
Also since the control unit is very flat and surface mounts it only
requires a cable behind it that attaches to wherever you mount the
receiver.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the comments (and the furler!). And congrats on the ORR!
It's great to see these good old boats get out there and compete!

Does your Jensen unit have an MP3 input? With all four of us having
separate iPods and playlists it's critical that whatever unit we get
have a 3mm cable or USB input. I like your idea of opening up the nav
station bulkhead forward of the electrical panel. I was concerned about
clearance around all the wiring back there but it must fit!

BTW, got low profile track blocks, fiddle blocks and misc. shackles for
running spinny guys and sheets from Garhauer based on price and they are
a relatively local company. Still need foreguy hardware and heavy sheet
lines but we should be ready to fly a chute by summer!

1.	Jay, the system I put in is a Jensen satellite unit, it comes in
two pieces the control panel and then the receiver. I mounted the
control panel on the forward nav station bulkhead so that it is
accessible from the settee and the receiver is mounted in the starboard
cabinet forward of the chain plates. I have located the antenna in
several locations and none seems any better than in the same location
with the receiver. It did come with a small "portable" antenna that
when reception is bad with the main antenna, I uncoil it run it through
the small port light up top and it works fine on anchor.

If your mounting cockpit speakers the best way is to cut a hole
for a deck plate, mount the speakers inside and keep them closed when
not in use. The typical installation with speakers showing to weather
could potentially allow 100s of gallons into your boat in the wrong
conditions if a wave took one or both of them out. I don't have any
speakers in the cockpit yet, but plan on running wire and fixing
something where I can plug the speakers in when needed possibly hanging
them from the rail and then removing them when not in use.

Good Afternoon Fellow C-38 Shepard's,

It's time to install a stereo system in Broad Reach. I'd like to ask
for your experiences. We have the original electrical panel (c. 1985)
with the little used shelfs under the panel and I was wondering if that
is the best location and if so what type of faceplate/panel you used.
Or did you install somewhere else in the salon?

I'm used to working with fiberglass, SS, etc., but never teak! Any
assistance would be greatly appreciated, especially photos of clean
installations regardless of location.

Thanks!...........Jay
