Jay,

Kairos was in divison B, A and B are the faster boats I think the rating range was something like -69 to 99, in that range they would have made the mark by nightfall and had the flood on their nose, we on the other hand made our way out to the center of the straits before the wind turned off so we could use the ebb in our favor. Nothing like being in the seperation zone of the shipping lanes in the middle of the night doing 360s with the current. The straits are about 17 miles wide and it is quite a sight to see them flat, rippleless, reflective arrrrrrr, I guess thats why its nicknamed Driftsure.

Great videos Steve! I like you're A-Sail. We can only dream of wind like that down here.

I have a friend that ended up getting on board one of the faster class A or B boats, I think Kairos and he said they ended up anchoring in almost 300ft. of water near the end in order to hold position against the current. They used several spin sheets & guys just to get to the bottom. Other boats in the area didn't have long enough rodes and were pushed back. Very interesting race!

I just posted some clips on my blog for anyone interested, they are from the Oregon Offshore and Swiftsure, fun stuff doing what are boats are meant to do.
