I should note though that on long distance races, two, three or four days
it's nice to have a little sleep and a able crew to take over the necessary
slots above board. LOL We have had up to nine in the Newport Beach to
Ensenada Mexico race and it was not a problem.

The other two or three are relief people. Extra weight on the high side is
always helpful and in a real calm put them below near the mast, in light
wind on the lee is good for some heel. A good tactician, if you can find
one, is always helpful too. We have done races with just four and it can be
hectic. We much prefer the distance races though and with four that's a
good combination.

Larry, what about the seventh and the eight, are they needed to be hanging
on the windward rail, or they will be just extra weight??
Does the boat reallly needs this extra weight on the rail?

Max, we have found that 6-8 works best for us on windward/leeward races.
You almost need two on the foredeck, one on the main/traveler and one on jib
trim and of course one on the helm which leaves one on a six man crew for
relief.
