Larry, check out Nexus...awesome stuff, several packages to get you in at a
price point you want (start Pack 3 is around $2800) and best of all, the
system works on the premise of having a central server to link the various
components...and those components don't have to all be theirs.  A boat I
race on is running a garmin gps, uses an Apple laptop with Navionics charts,
and has AIS, all tied to the server and has accurate info on the laptop and
on the cockpit displays for plotting position, performance, course, etc.
Each data display can be set to display virtually any info (speed, wind,
depth, COG, WCV (waypoint closure velocity, we love that one), etc, etc).
 This is what the offshore racers are using in northern New England.

Oh, and the head gear if wireless so there's one less bunch of
wire/connection to deal with.
