[C38] Protruding cap nuts on deck

Dan,

I'm not at my boat (it's one of those conservative types that thinks it
should sleep for 6 months a year just because its below freezing and
everything's covered with snow) so I'm going from memory, but I can't think
of any threaded bolt ends coming up through the deck...they all are on the
cabin side and have cap nuts. Not knowing your situation, have you thought
about inserting the bolts from the deck side so you only have the head to
stub a toe on?

I agree with previous posts that it would be nice to conceal the nut in the
cabin for a few reasons, and I replaced all of mine this summer due to
either a corroded surface or the deterioration of the rounded portion of the
cap. At that time I thought about concealment, but opted not to do it
because I felt that the additional liner material (and the integrity of its
gelcoat) were that much more holding strength for the hardware it was
connecting to the boat...and actually, in some cases added a fender washer
or stainless plate to further spread the load. What I did do however, was
trim/file the bolts such that there were no threads showing with the cap
nuts in place to clean up the aesthetics and reduce the opportunity to hit
them with head, or hand...or in the V-berth (if I'm lucky) my butt :) . I
also felt that the cap nuts were/are decorative and each bolt has a standard
nut as well...I'm probably over-cautious on that count, but I've had
hardware fail while 12 hours offshore and would rather err on the safe
side.
