You can get curved wrenches, they are called starter wrenches. Probably get a
cheap one at Harbor Freight or similar and do fine.

Subject: [C38] Starter removal

I'm trying to remove my starter to have it rebuilt. It doesn't crank the engine
very fast anymore. I usually have to have the battery switch on BOTH to get
enough power to start. I removed the alternator in hopes of getting to the top
nut on the starter. The nut is in such a tight spot and the way the starter is
shaped you can't get a straight shot at the nut. I tried to get to it from
behind the engine but the selenoid is in the way to use an open end wrench. Has
anyone been successful with some type of a deepwell socket or maybe had a
regular wrench bent to get to it?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks, Dan #108.
