[C38] Found a good engine here- Is it too big???

Cheap parts for a Yanmar? Surely you jest! I don't think "cheap" is in the Japanese marine engine lexicon.

You seem to have done fairly well so far finding the used engine so maybe your luck will continue.

Good luck,
Tom Troncalli

Got the new engine (at least, new to me!)!!!!

Bought the 40hp Yanmar for $2000, no panel or wiring harness, so I have to find those, but the engine seems to be in good condition, but still, I'm going to make a small overhaul just to be sure that I won't have to think about taking the engine out on the next few years... Since the 5424 is working, I can sell it and get some money back from the investment..... What I'm not so sure about is that the tranmission ratio is 2.6:1, so I guess that I will have to get a big prop with lots of pitch for a good match.........

Anyone knows a place for cheap parts for the Yanmar???

Hi Max!

Oh my gosh, that's put me in the hot seat! If something goes wrong will I be barred from Costa Rica forever?!

I'll be at the marina again this Friday & will do what I can to answer your questions. I really do think this engine will work well for you. Yanmars have a very good reputation, we have a sistership in our marina whose owners are very envious of us for buying IRIE with a new Yanmar already installed.

Congratulations!

Hey Peggy,
How Are you doing??

I wanted to let you know that I just mede the deal for the 3JH4E Yanmar engine..
If it wasn't for you, I wouln't have buy it, so thanks for your comments and the pic..

I still need to find out about engine bed modifications, muffler being used, exhaust elbow riser, and water strainer location (if you are using one!)..

If possible, and If you have the chance, please take some pics from your engine...

Some pics from the back will show the aft of the engine bed, the muffler and the elbow riser......

If by anychance you could check the diameter of the exhaust hose it will be great... Usually the internal diameter is printed on the outside of the hose....

Hope you can help me with this issue...
Regards,

Max

Hi Max,

Attached is the only photo I have right now, it was taken when we were
having the boat surveyed. Rory (he's Engine Maintenance Man) says that to
get to the dipstick you have to take off the top step of the companionway,
but once you do that the dipstick is easy enough to get to. Fuel filter is
right up front.

As for the engine bed, we don't know what it looked like before the
previous owner bought the Yanmar so we can't help you there! You can
probably just compare the photo to Estancia's engine compartment.

Cheers,

P.
