How easy it to remove the binnacle. The compass comes off easily. I just
had an electrician re-do wiring to depth finder and he said he had to remove
compass and it a "piece of cake."
We lost our rudder & had the self-furling main caught in the mast in the
Caribbean at the same time.. It wasn't a big deal. The weather was warm
and so was the water.

When configuring an emergency steering system dont forget that one of the
possibilities is that you will loose your rudder, any system should take
into account how to steer the boat if the rudder is damaged.

Fear of being under the deck, in foul weather, try to fix/remove the
wheel/pedalstal is part of why I took the whole damn thing out before our
Bermuda run. Now my emergency tiller is... Another tiller!

FWIW, ~10% of the boat that came into Bermuda while we were there had
steering gear problems. Scary!
