[C38] eBay Starter?

Good news!

The old starter is out, with about 2 dozen step by step photos.

The only truly puzzling part is the nut on the top of the unit.

Unlike the bottom, which is held in place with a bolt, and has enough
clearance for a tool, the top is a stud in the block with a nut and
washer.

There is not enough clearance to get a socket or wrench on it.

But.

If you have about 15" of extension, you can thread the socket in on a
slight angle in with the ratchet handle outside the forward part of the
engine.

The next puzzle is that as you loosen the nut, it binds the socket in place.

The solution is to pull the starter out as the nut loosens, keeping the
relationship of nut, starter, and socket constant. This gives just enough
clearance to remove the entire collection.

Of course once the starter clears the stud, everything comes apart and
fall deep under the engine where my short fat arms can't reach.

The other trick I used was to take a 12" piece of copper pipe and use it
to direct my fire onto the nut; without out the pipe, there would be no
way to put heat directly on the nut.

I'll make my photos up into a slide show and post on YouTube.
