[C38] Group 31 battery size and other offshore racing memories

Thanks everyone. I plan to go with a pair of optima blue top 31's. Looks like I can get them for $239 each, no delivery fee, no tax from 1st OptimaBattery. I need to get going on it as we'll be heading to Catalina fairly soon. I'll let you know how it works out.

For Steve, sorry you had to drop out of Transpac, but your story brought back 25 year old memories of ladling water out of the water tank for the last four days of a Newport Bermuda race after we burned up the starter and conserved the remaining battery we had for Loran fixes in the vicinity of Bermuda. We were very afraid we would miss the island all together having little confidence in our ability to DR in the Gulf Stream. That scar may also have something to do with my desire to have a spare starter....

Many thanks to you and Larry for letting some former offshore racers live vicariously through you. I can't help but check the yellowbrickroad app every evening now. Watching the sleds reel in the C38's was inevitable, but surprisingly painful to watch.

All LEDs inside and out is my long term plan as part of the engine and house rewire. Suspect I'll go to big 6V batteries, solar panels, and maybe even a little wind generator at that point. This new technology is just amazing.

Thanks, Dan

And a 33 amp emergency battery forward of the fuel tank which is for emergency lights and instruments it feeds a separate panel. All three banks are hooked up to the charger and a gizmo the name escapes me that regulates the charge to all banks evenly. Also replaced all lighting with LEDs and at night with full instruments and the mast head light only draw 2.5 amps.

I also have 180 watts of solar and a Air-Breeze wind generator. Even up here on Lake Superior, I have been "out" for 4 weeks and still make ice every day with frozen meat in the freezer.

Since I'm going to transition to AGMs, I'm thinking I shouldn't really need a storage box, just straps. Currently have a pair of group 27 deep cycle there that have only about an inch of clearance. Would like to get the flooded lead acid batteries out of the cabin. Second "bank" is a single starting battery in the port lazerette. Figure I'll do the full rewire in a couple years. Would welcome any thoughts. Thanks, Dan
