[C38] Skegs (not kegs!)

Max,
I raced a number of times on a Yankee 38. That boat was designed by
Sparkman Stevens as a One Ton Racer. Frank Butler replaced the flush
deck with the cabin we all know. Frank redid the rudder assembly -
possibly twice. He also made the mast taller and shortened the boom to
get a better IOR rating. I did a 2 day race from LA Harbor around San
Nickolas Island and return. The cockpit was extremely uncomfortable
because of low seat backs. The flush deck made the boat very wet going
to weather.

The early C-38s had a tiller and a gas Atomic 4 engine. A number of
members of Long Beach YC bought the boats and made them available for
the Congresssional Cup match racing. Joe Launie/Macavity

ever seen a Yankee 38, but I read that one of the modifications that
Frank Butler did to the 38 was replacing the skeg mounted rudder for a
spade rudder. Also said that the mast was replaced for a taller one with
small boom, but still, hull #1 came with the Yankee mast... So, who
knows... Could there be a 38 with skeg rudder?? We have noticed many
differences between early and later models during this year, so who
knows... Butler, perhaps??
