[C38] Alternators

Hey Larry,
I'm with you on the KISS principal. I've been using an automotive AC Delco
alternator and use lead-acid batteries, had no problemson Estancia since I
bought her. This means I can't give advice based on my usage because your
loads and batteries aret three times larger than mine.
I know that some people are doing great with Balmars, but some other hate
them and are retrofitting to original alts..
I also have a friend who's C38 caught on fire due to a Balmar alternator or
installation issue.....Whistling......!!LOL
This is just a thought, but I have read that for quick charging of huge
battery bank like yours, on racing boats dual alternators are
recommended, connected to a single regulator.....two alts is a huge load on
the engine, but since you'll be sailing, and the transmission is in
neutral, the engine will easily handle that load.
In your case, what about a wind generator?? That's around 40 amps while
sailing without engine running...
Regards,
Max
