One cautioin on higher load alternators or dual is they will put more mechanical load on the mounting bracket and engine and can fail as a result.

Hey Larry,

I'm with you on the KISS principal. I've been using an automotive AC Delco alternator and use lead-acid batteries, had no problemson Estancia since I bought her. This means I can't give advice based on my usage because your loads and batteries aret three times larger than mine.
I know that some people are doing great with Balmars, but some other hate them and are retrofitting to original alts..
I also have a friend who's C38 caught on fire due to a Balmar alternator or installation issue.....Whistling......!!LOL

This is just a thought, but I have read that for quick charging of huge battery bank like yours, on racing boats dual alternators are recommended, connected to a single regulator.....two alts is a huge load on the engine, but since you'll be sailing, and the transmission is in neutral, the engine will easily handle that load.

In your case, what about a wind generator?? That's around 40 amps while sailing without engine running...

Regards,
Max

Marine vs. Automotive; what says the list? And, I have discovered that
there is a difference between the two, well at least I have been told there
is. It has something to do with the grounding, apparently automotive
alternators ground to their case and marine alternators ground someplace
else. Having experienced charging problems on the way back from HI this
year I am now acutely aware of my dependency upon the electrical system of
	Hassle.

I had wanted to utilize the KISS principal but then, I think it got out of
hand LOL, laptops, water makers, inverter, sat phones, radar, chart plotter,
instruments, well the list goes on. What is, if there is one, the most
effective charging and regulating system out there? I need opinions based
upon your usage. FYI I have four AGL 110 amp house batteries and one small
AGL start battery. Currently using a Balmar regulator and a converted
	automotive 90amp alternator.

	Best regards,
