[C38] Teak

Larry,

If you remember Estancia's before/after pics, the interior came varnished with an awful dark oil based varnish. I stripped the whole interior and applied 10 coats of polyurethane satin varnish, just like every contemporary sailboat. The result was awesome. I sanded every three coats, and the tenth was the finish coAt. Eight years, and so far, so good, but why shouldn't? We use the same varnish on my fathers Bertram 54, and 15 years later it looks as good as when it was applied.
My previous boat, a spirit 28 came with the oiled teak, and I do prefer the looks and ease of maintenance of the varnished interior. No cracks anywhere, except for the teak on the deck. I'll rather spend time sailing than working on the boat, so I'm replacing all the exterior teak with starboard.
My opinion, varnish is the way to go....
Regards, max

I also stripped my Cat 38 with acetone 12 years ago and varnished it with satin as well, its heald up fine as well. This is below not on deck in both cases. I've had a couple of boat yard people who varnish tell me satin polyurethane is much harder than gloss.
