[C38] Drip less stuff

Hello Larry,

I was going to install a dripless packing on my boat until my next door
neighbor at my dock had one fail and almost sank his boat along with his
cruise to the Bahamas.

His dripless packing somehow froze up and ripped the bellows causing major
flooding of the bilge. After that I just bought the Gortex type packing
and installed it in my original packing gland and it was WONDERFUL. I
adjusted the adjusting nut so only a drip about every 7 seconds dripped and
my bilge stayed relatively dry after that. I bought the packing at Sail
Expo and I think I paid something like $15 and it took me all of 15 minutes
to install with the boat in the water.

One other good thing about the Gortex packing is it doesn't have to be
"burped" to water lubricate the seal since it is still water lubricated.
